紀州は紀州備長炭でも知られますが、紀州墨は、紀州備長炭の炭がまから採れた木灰の中でじっくりと乾燥されます。出来立ての墨は水分を含む灰の中に埋められ、徐々に水分の少ない灰の中に埋め変えられながら約2カ月の灰乾燥されます。灰乾燥後はゆっくりと自然乾燥され、完成までの約半年、大切に育てられます。
Kish is also know for high quality charcoal. Kishu Shoen Sumi inksticks are slowly dried with wood ashes made from the premium Kishu Charcoal. The freshly made sumi ink sticks are buried in Kishu Charcoal ash that contains moisture, then, gradually moved into ashes with less moisture, and finally, they are ash-dried for about two months. Subsequently, the ink sticks are dried slowly and naturally, and carefully nurtured for about six months until the completion of the process.
